Most brides-to-be have the occasional flurry of tears while planning the biggest event of their lives, but if you’re feeling a little too frayed around the edges then follow some top tips to looking after your mental health.
Get organised
There’s a lot to do before the big day, and the jumble of jobs can be overwhelming. Get out a pen and paper and start a list. Tackle one task at a time; alternate dull tasks with interesting ones. Don’t forget to delegate and when you’ve completed a task, reward yourself!
Get good sleep
Your pillow is not the place to be thinking about seating plans and stationery. Well before heading to bed, divide your worries into those that you can do something about and those that you can’t. Before popping on those PJs, take a bath, listen to relaxing music or read something non-wedding related.
Be active
Exercise is good for the body and mind. Burning energy helps you feel calmer, stronger, and more able to deal with emotional stresses. Try something you enjoy regularly, like walking the dog or swimming – you’ll soon see the benefits.
Don’t bottle things up
Feeling confused, stressed or even depressed? Don’t keep it to yourself. No matter what the problem, get it off your chest. Whether it’s your friend, or a family member sometimes just having someone listen to your problems can make a big difference.
Take a regular break
Remember the last night you had an evening free of wedding conversation? If not, you need to take a break. Go for a walk after dinner, watch a film or see friends. Allocate time for wedding planning and stick to it. You should have a life outside the wedding, too.
Live in the moment
If you’re caught up in planning and preoccupied with a to-do list, remember to pay attention to the things around you. Living in the moment makes you feel more positive. Each day, take time to sit still for a few moments and listen to the sounds around you, think about how your body feels and take slow deep breaths.
Get a different perspective
We all need a little help now and again, so if you’re struggling with a decision, or want to get a second opinion, ask someone else. Maybe they will help you see something differently or help you find an alternative way to resolve a conflict.
Focus on the future
Your wedding day is important, but not as important as your future together. Remember the reasons why you decided to get married in the first place and that small details, which seem pressing now, will all be a distant memory when you’re finally relaxing on your honeymoon.
Get support
If wedding stress starts to make you feel unwell, you’re not alone. It can happen to anyone. Remember to talk to your doctor.
Too much to do? It’s time to delegate some jobs to friends and family. See how they can help you create your dream day.
